To Pat Robertson: Please Stop..

Ian at Ruminations By The Lake has a post about a petition which basically is asking Pat Robertson to be quiet and stop "prophesying".

Pat has abused his prominent position by continually repeating what God has allegedly told him. His statements are not only controversial, but they are often errant. In the latest case he made a prophesy about a terrorist attack in 2007, and claimed that God told him that. When Pat speaks, while he doesn't formally represent me, people do see him as an evangelical leader and hence associate his position with all of evangelical Christianity.

I think the petition is worth signing. Though it likely will not influence Pat Robertson, it is a good demonstration that large numbers of conservative evangelical Christians reject what Pat is saying and regret the fact that Pat is seen as a representative of conservative Christianity.

Towards the end, the petition says:

"Whereas Pat Robertson has, in the last several years, abused the authority of Scripture, abused the license of a minister of God....and abused the position of high visibility to the public he possesses in those ways while representing himself as a minister of the Gospel,

Therefore, we respectfully and earnestly exhort him to stand down from his self-appointed position as 'prophet' -- that is, one who receives God's own words and speaks them to the world apart from established Scripture -- and apologize to the church, and on behalf of the church to those who have witnessed his abuses, for his on-going representation of himself as a mouthpiece for God Almighty."

So far there are 300 signatures.

I'll change your clocks for half his price or a cold beer. And no I will not do VCR clocks. If your VCR isn't flashing, you are already a step ahead of the game and don't need my help.

Hair & Facial Hair & Theologians

Warning: I consider this to be one of the weirdest posts I've ever made.

One interesting observation is the fact that the "norm" in 21st century Evangelical male hair & facial hair is radically different than that of the earlier reformers, puritans, and theologians. For example, at almost every point in history beards, moustaches, goatees, sideburns, and longer hair was not only accepted, but almost the norm among evangelical male Church leaders. However, in North American 21st century Evangelicalism, the norm has shifted over to shorter hair and clean shaven appearance.

The norm for me is a buzz cut and a (usually) cleanshaven face. On occasion I will grow a bit of a goatee or a beard.

Many Christians understand I Corinthians in such a way that it would forbid any males in any culture from having "long" hair. And yet, it would appear that (at least from the drawings of them), most learned theologians of the 1600's and before had long hair (at least by our standards). Being a guy who rarely has more than 1 inch of hair, I have no problem fitting into the idea that a guy should have short hair.

One interesting vein of thought is that the early evangelical pioneers, reformers, and theologians actually looked a bit more like the hippies of the 1960's than mainstream evangelicals of the 1960's.

I submit some examples (left column is well-known theologians, right column is 1960's counter-culture hippie-type musicians). Please understand that I..

1. Do not insinuiate that these individuals share similar lifestyles or views (in fact, their views of life and the meaning of life were VERY different)
2. Am not condoning the lifestyles of the people on the right side or calling into question the integrity of the people on the left side.

I merely want to provide some comic relief and some "Hmmm.." for the readers of this blog.

Top left -> John Bunyan
Top right -> David Crosby

Middle left -> B.B. Warfield
Middle right -> Jerry Garcia

Bottom left -> John Calvin
Bottom right -> Cat Stevens (interestingly, he converted to Islam later in life)









They kind of look like each other (with strong emphasis on KIND OF). By the grace of God, however, the people on the left column had a more solid foundation and a worldview that was able to provide them with TRUE peace. This, however does not change the fact that the people on the right were also created in God's image and also have displayed vast amounts of creativity, skill, etc.

A Fix of Trimethylxathine

Some of you may have heard of a drug named Trimethylxathine. The drug is very popular and tracends social classes. The average dosage is 300 mg per day, normally taken orally. A dose of around 10 grams is deadly, though even 3 or 4 grams has been known to cause death.

A high dose of this drug could case gastrointenstinal problems, violent behavior, muscle twitching, diursesis, anxiety, panic attacks, and even hallucinations. The substance is physically addictive and is also known to reduce motor coordination, cause insomnia, headaches, and diziness. It can effect childbirth, causing IDS, miscarriage, etc.

The drug acts as a stimulant, operating through mechanisms similar to (although milder than) heroin and cocaine. One such similarity is the increase of dopamine. It also is known to have withdrawl symptoms including fatigue, muscle pain, and headaches.

Should this drug be legalized? Oh, wait..it already is. The drug I'm talking about is caffeine. And, no, I'm not on an anti-caffeine crusude. I enjoy my occasional Yerba Mate tea or Oolong tea.. ;)
